Here Comes the Bride!

Carol Corbett

The bridal-expo, extravaganza, convention, show, wine tasting, mock wedding, whatever the name given, it’s a great way to talk up the talent in your area and score big savings on your wedding day. With multiple vendors, from DJs to dress designers, these events can be a great help in planning the Big Day…they can also be a jumbled mass of bridal chaos. Usually hosting upwards of 100 brides, who often bring along their maid of honor and two moms...quickly adds up to a very full function hall. There are several things that you can do to ensure that you have fun and also get down to business amidst the frenzy.

First, do your research.
Visit the venue website beforehand. At minimum, there should be a list of attendees; there might even be a floor plan or showcase of event discounts. Scope out the vendors in categories you’re still looking to fill, visit their individual websites to check on typical pricing to compare with show specials. Write down any specific vendors you’d like to chat with and questions you have for these vendors (with space for their answers) in a notebook and bring it with you.

Plan your attack.
What are your goals in attending this event? Are you simply gathering ideas at the beginning stages of your plans, or would you like to take advantage of the show specials and book a photographer, DJ, or limo? If the second is the case, be prepared. Great deals can be had, but don’t just sign up with someone under the events pressure. You can always wait until you have more information or can speak with someone further. Write down your goals in your notebook as a reminder to stay on task during the event.

Pack your bag. Grab a comfy shoulder tote and pack it with:
Your plan of attack
Notebook of vendor questions and a pen
Return address labels (to enter freebie contests with ease)
Bottle of water (snacks will be plenty, but drinks likely few)
Magazine cutouts and ideas for your ideal wedding (swatches of your colors, etc)
Your budget and a calculator for quick checks on affordability
Checkbook and/or credit cards to make deposits

When you arrive at the venue, take a “just-looking” lap.
Wander by every booth simply taking it all in. On the second lap, the “gatherer lap,” focus on the vendors you’ve already pre-pinpointed as interesting to you as well as any that caught your eye on the first lap. Gather as much information from these vendors as you can. Be sure to grab business cards, brochures and samples to refer to later and note what you do and don’t like about each one. Snack on delectable treats (even if you already have a baker and caterer picked out) and take advantage of the promotional raffles sure to be offered at nearly every table. Take a mini-break with whomever you’ve brought along to discuss the vendors you’ve met with and how they may fit into your plans and budget. Now for the final “closer” lap. Approach your chosen vendors and take advantage of those show specials, even try haggling down a bit more to get an optimum deal. Finally, if you’re like me, swing past that delicious cupcake tree one more time to celebrate success.
